Tips for Scholarly Publishing

Tips for Scholarly Publishing

What is your ORCID?

ORCID provides a persistent digital identifier (an ORCID iD) that you own and control, and that distinguishes you from every other researcher.  It is required for scholarly communication.

Where to publish?

Journal recommendation Services (https://www.ifis.org/jrs) run by IFIS, International Food Information Services help to find the right journal. Coverage includes a list of over 1,200 quality-checked journals over the world.

Using Google Scholar and databases like Scopus, you can find editorial standards, citation profiling, and selective decisions.

Search with your article title and abstract to return journal suggestions based on similarity scores, along with information about peer review and production turnaround times. Examples: Elsevier Journal finder and Springer Journal suggester.

How to check access?

Different levels of access: closed access (subscription), Gold OA (paid, immediately available through publishers), and Green OA (free, repository hosting).

How to use citation metrics to check journal quality?

Scopus CiteScore = the number of times documents published in the previous 3 years have been cited in the year of reporting, divided by the number of documents.

SCImago JournalRank (SJR) is a ranking based on the transfer of prestige from one journal to another based on Scopus citation data. Calculations are similar to those of the Journal Impact Factor.

Use Scimago when a Journal Impact Factor is not available, or when investigating across different fields and a publication is indexed in Scopus.

How to avoid predatory journal?

Publications that claim to be legitimate scholarly journals but misrepresent their publishing practices.

1. Always check the website thoroughly

2. Check if the journal is a member of DOAJ

3. Check the journal’s contact information

4. Research the editorial board

5. Look at their peer review process and publication timelines
