Google Scholar Metrics

  • Citation Counts: Citation counts are available per publication or limited to the last five years.
  • Citation Graph: This visual presentation detailed citation data within a Google Scholar Citations Profile. A graph capturing total citations by year is available for all publications in a Google Scholar Citations Profile.
  • H-index: Captures output based on the total number of publications and the total number of citations to those works. A H-index of 32 implies that an author has written 32 papers which have each received at least 32 citations. It is used to quantify research output by measuring author productivity and impact.
  • i10-index: The number of publications by a researcher with at least 10 citations. It helps to gauge the productivity of a scholar.

Metrics

Limitation

  • There is no standardization of author names so you may have to search multiple variations of a name to find works written by an individual.
  • Citations are not always from peer-reviewed sources. Anything cited by another article, whether scholarly or not will be included in the times cited list.  This can include blog posts, PowerPoint, and undergraduate thesis.
  • Every version of an article is included in search results so there are likely duplication for the same article and the times cited counts.
  • Self-citations are not removable. You have to look for them yourself which can be time-consuming.
